Dental Cream Poisining

Saturday, July 16th, 2011

Super Poligrip and Fixodent are denture cream products used to adhere dentures to the mouth so that consumers do not have to worry about slippage or denture movement. Super Poligrip, produced by GlaxoSmithKline healthcare company, and Fixodent, produced by Proctor and Gamble, are two of the most popular denture cream products. In recent studies, denture creams such as Fixodent and Super Poligrip have been linked to zinc poisoning, neuropathy, and copper depletion.

The media started to report on the denture cream issue and the responses of the 2 manufacturers in early 2010. In February of 2010, GlaxoSmithKline announced that it would remove zinc from its denture adhesive products. In addition, Proctor and Gamble put a warning tab on its website. Hundreds of lawsuits have subsequently been filed against the makers of these denture creams.

High zinc intake caused by denture creams such as Super Poligrip and Fixodent often lead to zinc poisoning, known as hyperzincuria. As a result of high zinc levels, the body depletes copper levels leading to copper depletion, known as hypocupremia. In addition, nervous disorders such as neuropathy and myelopathy have been linked to excessive use of Denture cream.

In studies the patients showed only mild neurologic improvement after they quit using denture cream and began taking copper supplements, so the injuries are permanent.
