Neck Surgery After a Car Crash: What You Must Know

February 5th, 2016

Neck injuries range from sprains and strains to whiplash, broken vertebrae, and herniated discs. Some major injuries even require neck surgery in order to repair the damages. Neck surgery may require extensive recovery time and painful physical therapy and can result in limited movement.

Common Symptoms Following an Accident

After an accident, you may experience the following symptoms. These symptoms should be checked out by a physician right away!

  • Stiff, painful neck
  • Whiplash
  • Ruptured or herniated discs
  • Headaches
  • Pain in the arms, shoulders, or hands
  • Muscle spasms in the neck
  • Numbness in the neck

Five Major Neck Surgeries

Your doctor may recommend neck surgery as a result of your injuries. There are five major surgeries that can result from a car collision:

  • Diskectomy – In a diskectomy, the herniated disc is removed completely. The disc is the material the separates the vertebrae in the neck. When it shifts, as sometimes happens as the result of an accident, it applies painful pressure and can cause numbness or weakness. It can be removed through an anterior diskectomy (from the front of the neck) or a posterior diskectomy (from the rear of the neck).
  • Spinal fusion- This fusion procedure uses a piece of bone to join the vertebrae together in an attempt to minimize pain.
  • Percutaneous vertebroplasty – A cement-like material is injected into the vertebrae to fill cracks from a compression fracture.
  • Disc replacement – An artificial disc replaces the damaged disc and provides a gel-like cushion between the vertebrae.
  • Laminectomy – This procedure involves removing the bone near the canal of the spine to alleviate pressure and pain.

Recovery Time

These surgeries all require recovery time and some may require a period of physical therapy. Obviously, medical costs and time off work can add up quickly. Pain and suffering can be great, as well. Some of these issues may even result in a lifetime of pain or disability. Obviously your health and wellbeing is critical and you should not be forced to suffer due to the negligence of someone else.
